Articles on
Family Abuse from The ekklesia News Room
By way of introduction, my name is Maria Jenkins; I am a 37
year-old law-abiding married woman with a 12 year-old son.
I have never had any legal problems, not even a traffic
ticket, and I have always tried to do my civic duty as a
citizen in the 18 years I've lived in Klamath Falls. Now I
am terrified of the people we pay to serve and protect us
and of the corrupt public officials in our community who are
abusing their offices of authority and violating our civil
rights. And because of this I truly fear for my life and
for my family.
It all started four years ago when I and my son were
subpoenaed to testify in a sex-abuse case. This case had
been dropped, suspended and postponed numerous times within
that four-year period and each time I would be re-subpoenaed.
But before the actual trial date the District Attorney Ed
Caleb and his office would have turned my and my family's
life into a living hell and is maliciously continuing to do
so.
The prosecuting attorney on the Robert Todd sex-abuse case,
David Groff, phoned to tell me that if I didn't come and
tell them what they wanted to hear he would have me
arrested. I replied that I would come to court and tell the
truth and that he had no right to threaten me. Apparently
that's not what he wanted to hear; what transpired next was
his way of having me arrested.
Meanwhile, my son's bicycle, after being missing for 10
months, was recovered. Apparently the girl across the
street had stolen it and taken it to her nanny's house. The
following day my husband asked the young girl why she had
stolen the bike, before confronting her parents. He was
verbally attacked by this girl and I was physically
attacked. But because of their political ties that her
parents have in the community, and because they are friends
of the district attorney and of the sheriff's officer that
took the report, the same officer that works in Chiloquin
where they own a taco stand, I was arrested two weeks later.
This woman who attacked me is 6'2" and 260 pounds; I am 5'0
and 120 pounds. But this is conveniently left out of the
police report. This would be just the beginning of
prejudiced attacks and threats from the District Attorney
and his office.
Once again my son and I were subpoenaed for the Robert Todd
sex-abuse case. Just weeks before the trial and summer
vacation a sheriff's daughter was enrolled in my son's class
and shortly thereafter she made allegations accusing my son
of sexual misbehavior towards her. That same week she beat
up my son by kicking his legs in. We filed a police report
and took pictures but to no avail.
Meanwhile the Robert Todd case went to trial. The D.A.
spent over $50,000 of taxpayers' money prosecuting this case
and there were many agencies involved; very high profile but
no media coverage. I gave very damaging testimony against
the prosecution and because of that they lost the case. I
am happy that the reputation of an innocent man was cleared,
but because of that loss the District Attorney has a
personal vendetta against me and my family. It has been ten
and a half months since my false arrest on malice charges
but the criminal intimidation and harassment continues.
Unable to pay for legal counsel I have been assigned five
different attorneys in succession (twice they tried to give
the attorney who was acting for the plaintiff!). Twice I
was offered "deals". The plaintiff has achieved popular
support through a newspaper article featuring her encounter
with a suspect who allegedly had stolen money from her
family's restaurant, probably an effort to influence public
opinion on her behalf in the event of a court appearance.
Sergeant Sellers of the Sheriff's department, who was
familiar with all the circumstances of my case and was
prepared to testify in my behalf has died unexpectedly.
There was an attempt on my family's life. The D.A.'s office
has threatened me once again. This time I talked to
Commissioner Al Switzer's office and he did put in a verbal
complaint on my behalf but the harassment continues. The
most recent incidents: while driving, my husband was pulled
over by a traffic patrolman. The reason? He said he
thought I and my husband were arguing. The previous evening
we had been stopped by an officer just as we were pulling
into our drive. He said the light on our license plate was
out. This was not true.
Where does this end? I feel as if I had been raped. I've
had a nervous breakdown and am under a physician's care.
I've written to four state senators, two state
representatives, Mr. Hardy Myers in the Justice Building,
the US. Attorney, Congressman Bob Smith, and the
Governor... We must be fooling ourselves to think we live in
the land of the free. Is it possible to get justice from
abusive and corrupt elected officials? All of my
allegations can be dated and documented; I am in desperate
need of competent and unbiased legal assistance.
Sincerely yours,
Maria Jenkins
